One style of Chinese dress getting attention in the fashion community is called the Cheongsam. A Cheongsam is a women’s dress with quite distinctive Chinese details. The exact translation of the Chinese word Cheongsam is – long dress. A dress is also known as a gipao. There is quite a long and interesting history behind the name and even they style of the dress itself. It is believed that when the early Manchu rulers arrived in China they started calling a division of their people as “banner people” (giren). The Manchurian women wore one piece Chinese dress known as a “gipao” or “banner dress”. In spite of political changes the style of dress survived and later became the traditional dress of Chinese women. A traditional Cheongsam has a high collar which is closed. It’s sleeves which can be short, medium or long depending on the season and taste. The Chinese dresses for women are buttoned on the right side with a loose chest, fitted waist. It features slits up from the sides which accentuate the female shape. The dress is easy to slip on and comfortable to wear.
